Dr. Seung-Yong Seong is a globally renowned authority in the field of immunology. Drawing on his research experience at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), he introduced the world’s first DAMPs (Damage Associated Molecular Patterns) theory to the academic community in 2004. This groundbreaking concept — that molecules released from damaged cells can trigger immune responses and cause inflammation — has since become a core theory featured in immunology textbooks worldwide.
Driven by a vision to go beyond academic achievement, Dr. Seong founded Shaperon in 2008 at Seoul National University College of Medicine to develop innovative therapies that fundamentally control inflammation. Breaking away from the traditional pathogen-focused approach of immunology, he proposed a novel therapeutic strategy that targets internal cellular damage signals and their impact on the immune system.
Under Dr. Seong’s leadership, Shaperon has spent the past two decades transforming scientific theory into clinical evidence. Today, the company stands as a global biotech leader in novel drug development, with world-class research capabilities and clinical development expertise.
